Pécs
Pécs is one of the most exciting cities in Hungary, where the Mediterranean atmosphere, Roman-era relics, and vibrant cultural life come together.
Top sights in Pécs:
-
Pécs Cathedral – an impressive, over thousand-year-old cathedral with stunning frescoes and a panoramic view of the city.
-
Cella Septichora Visitor Centre – a UNESCO World Heritage site with Roman-era burial chambers and mosaics.
-
Pécs Mosque (Mosque of Pasha Gazi Kassim) – a Turkish-era building located on the main square, symbolizing the Hungarian–Ottoman past.
-
TV Tower and Misina Peak – the highest point of Pécs, offering a magnificent panorama of the Mecsek and the city.

Stone-Crushing Giant
One of the best-known figures of Baranya’s folklore is the Stone-Crushing Giant. Two more of his kind can be found in the Eastern Mecsek: the Wood-Cutter Giant (in Bikal) and the Iron-Grinder Giant (in Mecseknádasd). According to legend, the giant is so strong that he can crush even the largest rock into fine flour. The giant can be visited free of charge, but if you want more, the folk museum in Hosszúhetény offers a fantastic game through which the village’s history is presented, and you can also enjoy a great hike in the forest on the same day.

Zsolnay Quarter
The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter has received the Hungarikum designation. Through its permanent exhibitions and regular programs, visitors can learn about the history of the Zsolnay family, unique porcelains, and the Zsolnay Mausoleum. In addition, children’s programs, theatre performances, concerts, as well as leisure and educational activities are regularly held here.

Óbánya
Óbánya lies in a narrow valley surrounded by the beautiful, protected forests of the Eastern Mecsek. The village has a unique atmosphere: through its single street runs a fast-flowing mountain stream, the Öreg Stream. The well-kept houses lining the street are mostly traditional peasant homes with porches, and the courtyards are typically closed off by cellars carved into the hillside. The village assembly has declared the street view protected, and the residents also wish to preserve its romantic, old-fashioned charm. Due to the beauty of its natural and built environment, Óbánya is sometimes referred to as the “Hungarian Switzerland.”
